Representing the fascination the Portuguese have for exploration, the Monument to the Discoveries, built for the 1940 World Fair conceived by Portuguese architect José Ângelo Cottinelli Telmo, and sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida. This sculptural piece sits on the northern bank of the Tagus River in the Belem area. This macro shot details a cadre of soldiers and explorers set against a dramatic blue sky.
